KIM Minju Shines Down the Stretch, Claims Valuable Opening Victory Over An Sunju
[Chuncheon=Kang Byeong-koo] KIM Minju (Samchully) displayed composure and mature course management to defeat veteran An Sunju and secure an impressive victory in her opening match at the 18th Doosan Match Play.
KIM recorded a 3&1 victory over An during the first group-stage match played on the Nature-Garden Course (Par 72, 6,503 yards) at Ladena Golf Club in Chuncheon, Gangwon Province.
The match did not begin smoothly for KIM. She lost the opening hole and briefly trailed, but quickly regained momentum. A birdie on the 3rd hole brought the match back to level, and from the 4th hole onward she began to establish control through consistent play.
As the match progressed, KIM maintained her advantage with steady execution and smart decision-making. A birdie on the 10th hole helped strengthen her position, while another birdie on the 14th effectively shifted the match firmly in her favor.
Her concentration became even more evident on the back nine. KIM minimized mistakes during key moments and relied on solid putting and accurate iron play to prevent An from mounting a comeback. Holding a two-hole lead through the 16th, she closed out the match on the 17th hole to complete a convincing victory.
Rather than relying on aggressive tactics, KIM focused on stability and consistency throughout the round. Her ability to maintain composure during crucial moments and remain unaffected by the psychological challenges unique to match play proved decisive.
The Doosan Match Play is the only match-play event on the KLPGA Tour. Following the group-stage competition, only the winner of each group advances to the knockout rounds. With a victory in her opening match, KIM Minju has positioned herself strongly heading into the remainder of the tournament.
