KIM Jaehee’s Back-Nine Focus Shines in 1UP Victory Over Jeong Yunji
[Chuncheon=Kang Byeong-koo] KIM Jaehee (SK Telecom) relied on her composure and strong concentration down the stretch to defeat Jeong Yunji (NH Investment & Securities) and claim an important victory in the opening match of the 18th Doosan Match Play.
KIM recorded a 1UP victory over Jeong during the first group-stage match held on the Nature-Garden Course (Par 72, 6,503 yards) at Ladena Golf Club in Chuncheon, Gangwon Province, on May 13.
The contest was tightly contested from the beginning. Both players displayed steady golf and avoided costly mistakes, keeping the match evenly balanced through the early holes.
KIM gained momentum with a birdie on the 7th hole, but Jeong responded on the 8th, and the match remained level heading into the back nine.
The turning point came after the turn. KIM regained control with a birdie on the 11th hole and gradually built momentum through a series of solid performances. Her ability to maintain consistent ball-striking and smart course management allowed her to take the lead and keep pressure on her opponent.
From the 14th hole onward, KIM showcased particularly impressive iron play and calm putting under pressure. Each time Jeong attempted to mount a comeback, KIM answered with steady execution and disciplined decision-making.
Rather than relying on aggressive play, KIM’s success was built on consistency. She repeatedly found fairways at critical moments and maintained her rhythm throughout the round. Her concentration appeared to grow stronger as the match progressed.
Despite the psychological challenges that are unique to match play competition, KIM remained composed and focused until the very end. She successfully protected her narrow advantage through the 18th hole to secure her first victory of the tournament.
The Doosan Match Play is the only match-play event on the KLPGA Tour. Following the group-stage competition, only the winner of each group advances to the knockout stage. By winning her opening match, KIM Jaehee established valuable momentum heading into the remainder of the tournament.
